What to pack

Most safaris typically impose a luggage restriction, commonly around 20kg per person – akin to the regulations of most international airlines for economy class travel. For efficient packing, it’s advisable to divide your luggage into two categories:

  • Checked baggage = 13-14 kg
  • Carry-on or hand luggage = 5 – 7 kg

This separation will facilitate your packing process. Additionally, be aware that during your safari, especially when boarding a charter flight, your luggage will need to be packed in a soft bag.

In terms of clothing:

  • Opt for lightweight cotton shirts and pants as they are most suitable. When it comes to color selection, neutral tones such as sand, stone, khaki, green, and olive work best. Personally, I prefer long-sleeve shirts as they offer the flexibility to roll up or down depending on the temperature. During the day, I opt for shorts; in winter, I always include a pair of track suit pants to layer over my shorts until it gets warmer.
  • For evenings, long pants are advisable, especially to protect against bugs.
  • A lightweight, good-quality jacket is a must; waterproof options are particularly practical.
  • Don’t forget to pack a reliable sunhat.
  • Ensure you have a well-worn pair of boots or comfortable sneakers (takkies). Avoid new shoes to prevent discomfort.
  • Include swimwear (swimming trunks) for any aquatic activities.

Most camps and lodges in Botswana, do offer a complimentary laundry service.

Medical/First Aid Kit:

  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen SPF 30-50
  • Painkillers
  • Nausea/Diarrhoea medication
  • Probiotics
  • Any medication you are on

Most camps and lodges do have an extensive first aid kit.

Extras:

  • Sunglasses – essential to combat sun glare and dust.
  • A reliable small flashlight
  • Your travel documents
  • A good book to read
  • Camera / Video Equipment:
  • Camera
  • Lenses
  • Video Camera
  • Storage devices
  • Adaptors and chargers
  • Toiletries – include all essentials.

Please avoid bringing strong-smelling perfumes and aftershaves, as they can attract bugs.

Top Tip:

Pack your camera and video equipment, along with sunglasses, travel documents, and a good book, in your carry-on luggage, along with an extra set of clothing. This way, if your luggage doesn’t arrive with you, you’ll have a clean change of clothes. The rest of your luggage should be placed in the hold.
