Activities

Experiencing wildlife and culture is at the very heart of what we offer at AfriTourism Collection.

Below is a comprehensive list of the immersive experiences available to our guests.

GAME VIEWING FROM CAMP

GAME VIEWING FROM CAMP

Take a moment to sit back with a pair of binoculars, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of wildlife you can spot. Gomoti River Lodge and Gomoti Villas, in particular, are prime locations for game viewing, thanks to their proximity to the lagoon. The area attracts a remarkable variety of wildlife, including resident hippos, elephants, impala, kudu, and even wild dogs!

SUNDOWNERS

SUNDOWNERS

No safari is complete without the obligatory sundowner experience. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and gold, we stop at a carefully selected sundowner spot - each guide having their own personal favorite.

Sundowners are always accompanied by light snacks, making for a perfect moment to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Before the afternoon drive, our team will ask for your drink selection, ensuring your preferred beverage is waiting for you as you toast to the beauty of Africa.

After sundowners, we make our way back to camp, where a warm and inviting evening awaits.

BIRD WATCHING

Bird watching

One of the most rewarding yet underrated activities, birdwatching in Northern Botswana is truly spectacular. With over 450 recorded species, the diversity of colors, calls, and behaviors is simply breathtaking. Whether you’re a dedicated birder or a casual observer, you’ll be amazed by how many species surround you when you pause and observe for just a few moments.

Key Birding Highlights
Okavango Delta (Moremi, Gomoti, Khwai, etc.) – Over 400 species

Specials: Pel’s Fishing Owl, Slaty Egret (Okavango endemic), Wattled Crane, African Skimmer

Waterbirds & Waders: Saddle-billed Stork, African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher

Raptors: African Fish Eagle, Bateleur, Western Banded Snake Eagle

MOKORO SAFARIS

MOKORO SAFARIS

The mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe once used by the indigenous people of the Okavango Delta to navigate its shallow waterways, remains an iconic mode of transport in the region. While today we use fiberglass replicas, the experience remains as serene and immersive as ever. Drifting just centimeters above the water’s surface, you’ll have the opportunity to observe painted reed frogs, vibrant birdlife, and - if luck is on our side - larger animals along the water’s edge. A mokoro excursion is truly a quintessential Okavango Delta experience.

Please note that the availability of mokoro excursions depends on seasonal water levels.

CULTURAL INTERACTION

Cultural Interaction

Botswana’s rich cultural heritage is often overlooked, yet it is an essential part of the safari experience. We subtly introduce guests to some of the country’s cultural highlights, from traditional greetings and songs to the flavors of our local cuisine. For those eager to dive deeper, our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always happy to share more about Botswana’s traditions, customs, and way of life.

Grasslands Safari Lodge: Distinguished by its authentic Bushman (San) experience, Grasslands Safari Lodge offers a unique insight into one of Southern Africa’s oldest cultures. The lodge’s authenticity is deeply rooted in the profound understanding and connection of its owners, Neeltjie (formerly De Graaff) and her husband Tiaan Bower. Neeltjie, a sixth-generation descendant with deep familial ties to the Bushmen, is fluent in Naro, the primary language of the San. She provides guests with unparalleled knowledge about San culture, customs, cuisine, and philosophy. The lodge offers immersive experiences such as traditional tool-making, village walks, and cultural storytelling, providing guests with a profound understanding of the Bushman way of life.

Gomoti River Lodge: For an authentic cultural experience, Gomoti River Lodge offers village tours to the historic villages of Khwai and Sharobe. Upon request, guests can explore these vibrant communities, interact with villagers, and gain insight into their daily routines and customs. The tours include engaging conversations with locals, opportunities to browse handcrafted souvenirs, and a chance to experience the warmth and hospitality of the community. These tours provide a deep connection to the land and its people, creating lasting memories of your cultural journey.

GAME DRIVES

DAY DRIVES

Mornings in the bush are alive with activity. After a wake-up call and light refreshments, we depart at sunrise, mimicking the natural rhythms of wildlife. Predators - big and small - are most active at this time, while the landscape comes to life with birdsongs and animal calls. During the drive, your guide will stop for a scenic coffee or tea break, allowing you to enjoy the stillness of the morning. Expect fascinating insights into the wildlife, trees, birds, and ecosystems that make this region so unique.

💡 Top Tip: If traveling in winter, bring a warm jacket - it’s much colder on the back of a safari vehicle than you might expect!

Afternoon Game Drives
After a relaxing high tea, we set off for an afternoon game drive, once again aligning with the natural movement of wildlife. Animals rest during the heat of the day and become active again in the late afternoon and early evening, making this an ideal time for sightings. As the sun begins to set, the golden light transforms the landscape, creating stunning photographic opportunities and setting the stage for one of the most iconic safari traditions…

BOATING SAFARIS

BOATING SAFARIS

Boating offers an exciting way to explore the intricate channels and vast lagoons of the Okavango Delta. In recent years, lower water levels have limited boating activities to select locations, such as our Xakanaxa Boating Experience.

During normal water years, we offer boating excursions from Gomoti for all guests staying at any of our three lodges.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS

These are the extra activities which can be pre-booked at either Losika Elepohant Camp, Gomoti River Lodge or Gomoti Villas.
