“An oasis of ancient baobabs and shimmering salt flats, where the spirit of the desert meets authentic African hospitality.”
Located just a few kilometers southeast of the gateway village of Gweta, Marula Camp is a striking sanctuary set within the dramatic, ever-changing landscape of the Makgadikgadi. This is a world of vast horizons and hauntingly beautiful silence, where the earth meets the sky in a seamless line of shimmering salt. Framed by giant, prehistoric baobabs and the fruitful Marula trees that give the camp its name, the property provides an exceptional base for those seeking to explore one of Botswana’s most iconic and surreal wildernesses.
Despite the predominantly arid environment of the pans, Marula Camp is a thriving oasis. The camp blends raw, salt-pan authenticity with a touch of understated style, nestled within pockets of natural vegetation where stands of mopane and acacia offer welcome shade from the African sun. Here, giant baobabs stand as timeless sentinels of the landscape, their twisted branches telling the stories of centuries past. It is an environment that invites you to slow down and absorb the “lunar” expanse of the pans, offering a stark and beautiful contrast to the lush waterways of the north.
At Marula Camp, we embrace the spirit of the desert—a landscape defined by its profound sense of space and solitude. Whether you are tracking the resident meerkat colonies, witnessing the dusty spectacle of the seasonal zebra migration, or simply enjoying the warmth of our hospitality beneath a canopy of stars, you are immersed in a landscape that feels truly ancient. Every detail, from the thatched central guest areas to the refreshing pool set beside our sentinel baobabs, is designed to offer a tranquil sanctuary in the heart of the salt-pan wilderness. This is more than a destination; it is an invitation to witness the resilience of life in the desert and the absolute serenity of the Makgadikgadi.
